Fargas Leaves Burroughs Feeling Ill

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Notre Dame High running back Justin Fargas slowly climbed into a golf cart as the third quarter ended and headed to the locker room.

Fargas had finally been stopped. It wasn’t by the Burroughs defense, however.

It was a case of stomach flu that ended Fargas’ night. Before he was through, he rushed for 247 yards and five touchdowns in 22 carries in Notre Dame’s 42-19 nonleague victory at home.

“We didn’t know if he was going to be able to play today,” Notre Dame Coach Kevin Rooney said. “When the game started, he said he felt better. He was vomiting, though, at the end.”

Burroughs (1-1) had a similar queasy feeling by then, too. Fargas scored on runs of three, three, six, 13 and 26 yards. Notre Dame (2-0) led, 42-11, when Fargas left the game.

Notre Dame quarterback David De Martinis complemented Fargas’ performance by completing eight of 10 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown.

Burroughs running back Randy Beckman rushed for two second-half touchdowns and finished with 83 yards in 13 carries. The sophomore scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter and on a 15-yard run in the fourth.

Beckman finished with 83 yards in 13 carries.

Glenn Adriatico, who played tailback and receiver for Burroughs, had seven catches for 82 yards and 58 yards rushing in 11 carries.

Notre Dame scored on its opening drive when Fargas ran through the middle for a three-yard touchdown, capping a 46-yard march in which Fargas gained all the yards in five carries.

Norte Dame’s final touchdown was set up by a 60-yard run by Fargas, his longest of the game. His final carry was a 26-yard scoring run.
