UC Irvine Advances in Water Polo Event

The top four seeded teams--California, Pepperdine, UC Irvine and USC--reached the championship bracket of the Southern California men’s water polo tournament with two victories each in pool play Saturday at USC’s McDonald Swim Stadium.

Sixth-ranked UC Irvine advanced by defeating Air Force and UCLA. The Anteaters (2-1) beat Air Force, 17-8, in the highest-scoring game of the day. The Anteaters jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Junior driver Kris Temple scored two of his game-high three goals during that run.

Earlier in the day, the Anteaters defeated fifth-ranked UCLA, 9-5. UCI scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to break a 5-5 tie, and win the match.

At the San Diego State women’s cross-country invitational:

Concordia second, Southern California College third--Tricia Mattson finished fourth with a time of 19:27, as Concordia took second with 64 points. Point Loma Nazarene won the invitational with 60 points. Rachel Lafady finished sixth for the Eagles with a time of 19:30 at Balboa Park.

SCC’s Maribel Delgado finished seventh with a time of 19:37, leading the Vanguards to a third-place finish with 84 points.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

SCC 2, Cal Baptist 0--Meggen Fleener scored both goals for SCC (6-2, 0-1) in the conference opener.

In the UC Irvine women’s soccer invitational:

Brigham Young 3, UC Irvine 2--Shaun Rohbock scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty-kick in the 49th minute as BYU remained undefeated at 8-0.

UC Irvine’s Katie Sheppard and Simone Ferrara each scored first-half goals.

Kirsten Roy had five saves in the loss for UC Irvine (6-3).
