If You’re Using Epil-Stop Depilatory Cream--Stop
The state Department of Health Services on Friday warned consumers to avoid using Epil-Stop Hair Removal System, a depilatory cream used to remove hair from the body.
The product has caused severe skin burns, according to Health Director Kim Belshe. The health department has received numerous complaints of burning shortly after the product is applied to the skin. Some of the burning was accompanied by swelling, blistering and skin discoloration, according to officials.
Consumers who have used this product and have experienced adverse effects should seek medical attention and report complaints to the California Department of Health Services, Food and Drug Branch, (800) 495-3232.
The department’s Food and Drug Branch has ordered the company to refrain from distributing any of the product from its distribution site in Bell. The company, based in New York City, sells its product by mail order and on television.
A representative of the company has told state health officials that the company is replacing Epil-Stop with a reformulated version.
