Conekid Hits Road With Construction Safety Tips

Share

Conekid, a bright-orange mascot shaped like a traffic cone, talked to students Monday about how to stay safe around construction sites.

The mascot is part of an educational outreach program designed by Caltrans and the Orange County Transportation Authority to promote safety near construction along the Santa Ana Freeway.

“Conekid teaches kids the ABC’s of construction--Always Be Careful,” said Nathan Silverman, an account manager handling the project at Paine & Associates.

The mascot warned students at several Anaheim and Fullerton schools about what to look for when they pass construction sites on their way to and from school.

General street safety, like how to cross the street and how to read street signs, is also discussed.

The visits will continue in the coming months at schools neighboring the 9.5-mile freeway expansion project.

The construction project, which includes widening the freeway from six to 10 lanes, affects Orange, Anaheim, Fullerton and Buena Park. The construction is to be completed in 2000.
