Drive-In Property Division to Be Debated

A controversial request by owners of the former Hi-Way 39 drive-in movie theater to subdivide the 25-acre property will be heard by the City Council tonight.
The city already has approved development of the Gateway Center, at Beach Boulevard and Trask Avenue, with a Wal-Mart, a car wash, fast-food and other retail shops.
But officials from California Drive-In Theaters Inc., which owns the property, said a subdivision would make the land more marketable.
The city’s Planning Commission recently denied the request, however, saying that it was not in agreement with the original plan, which would allow for separate ownership of land parcels and would make enforcement of conditions more difficult.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in chambers, 8200 Westminster Blvd.
