Firefighters to Launch Petition Drive Seeking County Merger
Firefighters and their supporters have notified the city that they will collect signatures to put a measure on the ballot that asks voters whether the city Fire Department should be replaced with the Los Angeles County Fire District, officials said Monday.
City Clerk David Barron said the Monterey Park Firefighters Assn. and resident Andrew Islas have submitted a notice of intent to circulate a petition for the ballot measure.
Firefighters need to gather at least 10% of the 24,000 registered voters’ signatures to qualify the measure for the next regular city election. If they gather 15% of voters’ signatures they could force a special election sooner, Barron said.
The move comes as voters in Alhambra and West Covina are set to vote in December on whether to replace their city fire departments with the county fire district, which would absorb the firefighting units.
