LAPD Receives Grant to Combat Alcohol Control Violations
The Los Angeles Police Department received a $100,000 grant from the state’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Control to fight alcohol-related crimes, authorities said Monday.
The grant, one of 17 awarded to law enforcement agencies across the state, will be used by the LAPD to crack down on business owners who sell alcohol to underage drinkers, continue to serve intoxicated patrons, maintain disorderly premises, evade alcohol taxes and a number of other crimes, officials said.
Using a similar grant last year, the LAPD cited or arrested more than 1,600 violators, resulting in $4.5 million in fines.
Additionally, many bars and liquor stores had their licenses suspended or revoked, LAPD officials said.
“This [program] has been extremely successful in combating alcohol-related crimes in the vast majority of cities throughout the state,” said Carl DeWing, spokesman for the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control.
Last year, the LAPD used the grant to patrol parts of the San Fernando Valley and South-Central Los Angeles. The new grant will cover the entire city, officials said.
