Children with chalk will brighten old North 5th Street in Oxnard this weekend, as numerous community groups host the “Chalk One Up for Kids” festival to benefit after-school youth programs.

Chalk drawing will be just one of the activities at the festival, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Plaza Park on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be live music, food, face painting and puppet shows.

More than 20 community groups and school districts in the Oxnard Plain are organizing the event. Proceeds will help pay for after-school programs held at schools and community centers such as the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. With a theme of “Exploring Cultural Diversities Through Shared Experiences,” organizers hope to raise $10,000.

Squares for chalk paintings will bring donations of $7 to $100, depending on size. Along with schoolchildren, local artists are also expected to participate in the festival. For more information, call the Chalk Festival Committee at 312-0458.
