One week after celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Mar Vista Family Center will open a new building today and launch leadership training programs for children and adults throughout Los Angeles.

Mayor Richard Riordan and Councilwoman Ruth Galanter will attend today’s 9 a.m. grand opening of the S. Mark Taper Foundation Center for Community Leadership, said Lucia Diaz, director of the Mar Vista Family Center.

The two-story building and adjacent Mary and Norman Pattiz Plaza were completed in about four months at a cost of nearly $1 million, she said.

Diaz said the 3,100-square-foot building will allow more people from throughout Los Angeles to participate in the center’s programs, which include leadership courses, tutoring for elementary school students and classes in subjects such as infant care, dance, sports and photography.
