Savanna Turns Two Big Plays Its Way to Turn Back Cypress

Cypress wide receiver Tom Adame turned to teammate Rashaun Lawrence and said, in a soft voice, “Two plays was the difference.”

He knew what he was talking about.

Savanna (2-1) blocked a punt and turned it into a touchdown and Chris Hutton had a long run for another score as the Rebels beat Cypress, 15-9, Friday night in Glover Stadium.

With the Cypress (0-3) leading, 6-0, in the second quarter, Savanna’s Aaron Garcia broke through and blocked Marc Gilpin’s punt. Garcia, a senior defensive back, picked up the ball and raced 26 yards untouched for the score. Jason Brown kicked the PAT to give Savanna a 7-6 lead.

Savanna was trailing, 9-7, with 4 minutes 7 seconds left in the third quarter. Cameron King ran the ball three consecutive times for 13 yards. Then Hutton broke lose on a 50-yard scoring run with 2:01 remaining in the quarter. King’s conversion run gave the Rebels a 15-9 lead.

The Rebels, who did their best to give the game away by losing four fumbles and being intercepted once.

Savanna rushed for 338 yards, led by Kellum (149 yards in 17 carries), King (99 yards in 17 carries) and Hutton (84 yards in eight carries).
