Trustees Unanimously OK Teacher Contract

Orange Unified School District trustees have given their unanimous approval to a long-awaited contract for teachers.

Teachers, who had ratified the contract earlier this month, and some trustees were not completely happy with the contract, approved last week.

Those at the lower end of the scale will receive raises up to 25% and teachers at the higher end will see increases of up to 9%, depending on how many of them take a buyout of lifetime health benefits.

“I have been completely disgusted with the way the [union] handled negotiations,” said Trustee Max Reissmueller. “The misinformation and political posturing, the whole thing really ticks me off.”

Trustee Robert H. Viviano was more conciliatory but said he wants both sides to begin negotiations earlier and avoid the friction that occurred this past year.

The negotiations will begin again soon, as the new contract expires June 30, 1998.
