Native Americans to Share Culture
Topics ranging from beadwork to powwows and from nature walks to traditional dancing will be discussed by Native American speakers each Sunday through October at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa.
This Sunday, Charlie Cooke, a hereditary Chumash chief, will take families on an autumnal equinox walk through the hills of the Satwiwa Native American Indian Natural Area.
On Oct. 12, Cindy Beeshligaii will display her beadwork and powwow dance regalia. On Oct. 19, parents and children can participate in a pumpkin festival at Paramount Ranch, and on Oct. 26, Dutch and Barbara Crews will show their collection of handmade dolls and Choctaw artifacts.
All discussions will begin at 10 a.m. and are free to the public.
To get to the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center, take the Ventura Freeway to the Wendy Drive exit in Newbury Park. Go south to Potrero Road and turn right. At the stop sign, turn left, continuing on Potrero Road. The entrance to the park is at Gate 1. Parking is free.
