El Nino’s Toll for the City Reaches $4 Million
Storm-beaten Laguna Beach has incurred nearly $4 million worth of damage to public property in three El Nino-related storms, city officials said.
To repair the damage, storm drains are being installed, sink holes are being filled and landslides are being shored up. More than 60 public works projects are planned, are underway or have been completed. The storms occurred Dec. 6, Feb. 7 and Feb. 23.
The city will pay for about half of the costs, City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said. The remaining expenses are expected to be reimbursed by the federal government.
On Tuesday, Frank will ask the City Council to approve spending $1.4 million from the city’s general fund to pay for a partial list of improvement projects.
