Council Approves 16-Screen Theater
The City Council has approved changes to the development plan of a large theater and restaurant complex, ending a series of delays that have stalled the project.
In a unanimous vote Monday, Simi Valley council members gave developer Robert Selleck permission to make minor changes to his plan, which will include a 16-screen theater--the largest in Ventura County--and several restaurants and retail stores on Tapo Canyon Road and Alamo Street.
The council delayed the approval for several weeks because of objections raised by residents of the neighboring Vista Monte housing development, who feared that the 54,000-square-foot complex would be an unending nuisance, lead to higher crime and lower their property values.
The council held off on approving the project until Selleck made modifications to help answer residents’ concerns. These included raising the height of a wall separating the complex from residents, adding a full-time security force, eliminating some of the parking near the homes and adding extensive landscaping.
“There weren’t any problems that couldn’t be fixed,” Selleck said. “The residents and I worked together on this and because of that we’ve got a better project.”
Selleck plans to begin construction within the next month.
