Matadors Take Split With Last-Place Utah State

Cal State Northridge, recently acquainted with first place in the Big West Conference, had trouble with last-place Utah State and split a softball doubleheader Wednesday at Northridge.

The Matadors lost the first game, 2-0, but recovered in the second game with a 4-0 victory.

In the opener, the Matadors had only two hits against Utah State (9-14, 3-8 in conference play).

Northridge’s Tara Glaister (11-8) took the loss, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

In the second game, Ashlie Hayes had a home run and three runs batted in for Northridge (24-15, 11-8).

In another softball game:

Valley 7, Canyons 6--Brenda Pulido hit a two-run single during a six-run sixth inning and the Monarchs won a Western State Conference game at Valley.

Sandra Cisneros had two hits and scored a run for Valley (14-6, 6-1).

BASEBALL

CS Northridge 11, Hawaii-Hilo 1--Eric Horvat’s three-run double sparked the Matadors’ five-run fifth inning at Northridge.

Nakia Hill added a two-run home run, his second of the season, in the fifth inning for the Matadors (24-17), who have won 12 consecutive games.

Jim DeBiase (3-2) pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven.

Oxnard 10, Palomar 1--Matt Pitstick had two hits and four RBIs for the Condors (18-7) in the Palomar tournament.

Left-hander Tom Manos struck out eight and allowed six hits in eight innings for Oxnard (18-7).

Biola 5, The Master’s 4--Kurt Fillmore had three hits for the Mustangs (24-7) in a nonconference loss at home.

Pierce 7, Chaffey 6--Danny Phillips had three hits, including a home run in the seventh inning for a 7-1 lead, for Pierce (14-12) in the Rio Hondo tournament at Chaffey.

Valley 2-8, Rio Hondo 1-11--Steve Guerrero drove in Frank Diaz with a two-out single in the seventh inning for the winning run for Valley (7-17) in the first game of a doubleheader in the Rio Hondo tournament.

Diaz and Ray Montenegro each had two hits for Valley in the second game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 9, Loyola Marymount 0--Angela Lawrence scored 6-3 and 6-1 victories at No. 1 singles for the Waves (16-5).
