Defense Lets Santa Ana Down in a Loss to Mt. San Jacinto

Three errors led the way for six runs as Mt. San Jacinto upset Santa Ana, 6-5, in the first game of a pool-play doubleheader Thursday at the Hornet Hardball Classic.

Santa Ana wasted strong pitching performances by Heath Bell and Dennis Houlton, who combined for 16 strikeouts. Joe Urban had two doubles and two RBIs for the Dons.

In the second game, the Dons (25-8) redeemed themselves with an 11-4 victory over Mt. San Jacinto (7-18).

In other Hornet Hardball Classic games:

Fullerton 7-14, El Camino 3-4--Five pitchers held El Camino to four hits in a victory for Fullerton in the first game of a pool-play doubleheader sweep. Mike Caira had two hits and three runs scored for the Hornets (16-15-1). Teammate Mike McCue had one hit and two RBIs.

In the second game, Bo Bryant had three hits, a run scored and three RBIs for Fullerton. Bill Brundige had two hits, three RBIs and scored twice for the Hornets.

Pitcher Jim Hostetler pitched five scoreless innings for his fifth victory of the season.

In the Allan Hancock baseball tournament:

Cypress 9, College of the Canyons 4--Third baseman Shaun Larkin and first baseman Brandon Smith each hit a home run, going four for five with three runs scored and three RBIs for Cypress (18-15). College of the Canyons is 18-11.

In the Sequoias Easter baseball tournament:

Kings River 12, Orange Coast 8--Kings River broke an 8-8 tie with a four-run seventh inning. Bobby Calderon had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice for Orange Coast (15-15).

Orange Coast 9, Gavilan 3--Chad Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs and Bobby Calderon had three hits and two RBIs for Orange Coast (16-15). Ryan Evans went the distance for the win, striking out nine and scattering five hits.

In the Palomar tournament:

Golden West 9, Mt. San Antonio 4--Josh Roberts had three hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases in a pool-play victory for Golden West (16-15).
