Yovan Upsets Langenkamp in Boys’ 14s

Irvine’s Aaron Yovan upset 12th-seeded Eric Langenkamp of Scarsdale, N.Y., Saturday to advance to the second round of the Easter Bowl junior tennis tournament today at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Yovan rallied to defeat Langenkamp, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the boys’ 14 division.

In the boys’ 18 division, Irvine’s Chase Exon, seeded eighth, advanced to the third round by defeating Palo Alto’s Neil Bedrman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

David Lingman of Irvine also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ojai’s Rayn Eveloff.

Laguna Beach’s Aaron Talarico battled to a third-set tiebreaker, which Washington’s Carter Morris won to take the match, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9). David Martin of Key Biscayne, Fla., defeated Cody Jackson of Westminster, 6-3, 6-1.

In the boys’ 16 division, Nathan Thompson of Austin, Texas, defeated Anaheim’s Robert Chu, 6-3, 6-4.

In the girls’ 16 division, Huntington Beach’s Melissa Esmero, seeded 14th, defeated Laura James of Clifton, Va., 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the third round. Santa Ana’s Arpi Kojian also advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kimberly Barfuss of Denville, N.J..

In the girls’ 14 division, Laguna Beach’s Ashley Maddocks, seeded 14th, rallied to beat New York’s Julie Smekodub, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2.

In the girls’ 18s, Miami’s Tamara Sutton defeated Newport Beach’s Brittany Reitz, 6-1, 6-0.
