Mariachi Performance to Raise School Funds

The renowned mariachi group, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, will perform May 16 to raise money for the Santa Ana Education Foundation.

Proceeds will pay for student scholarships, after-school homework clubs and grants for teachers in Santa Ana schools.

Under Cano’s leadership, Los Camperos has become an institution in Southern California. The group was formed in the late 1940s after Cano moved to Los Angeles from his native Jalisco. The band played at theaters and dance halls across Southern California, including the Million Dollar Theatre in Los Angeles, which was the mecca for Mexican musical stars during the 1960s.

Cano opened La Fonda in 1970 near MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, a restaurant where Los Camperos performs on a regular basis.

Los Camperos will give an afternoon performance at 4:30 p.m. and an evening performance at 8 p.m. May 16 at Santa Ana High School, 520 W. Walnut St. Ticket prices range from $25 to $100. Information: (714) 245-5008.
