Dollar Picks SCC Basketball Assistants
Cameron Dollar, who replaced Bill Reynolds as Southern California College’s men’s basketball coach last week, selected John O’Malley and Michael Jones as his assistants this week.
Last season was O’Malley’s first at SCC. He served under Reynolds, who retired in March after 17 seasons. Jones was an assistant at Pasadena College last season.
Dollar, 22, who played a key role in UCLA’s 1995 national championship run, took his first head coaching job after spending last season as an assistant at UC Irvine.

Women’s soccer: El Toro High’s Annie Jacobs and Riverside North’s Brittany Braun made oral commitments to SCC, Vanguard women’s soccer Coach Scott Dameron said. Both players are midfielders and both were first-team all-league selections last season.
Kerry McGrath Crooks, Edison High girls’ soccer coach, will join SCC as an assistant, Dameron said. Crooks, who was the Sunset League coach of the year last season, also will remain at Edison.

More SCC: The Vanguard softball team continued its strong play with a doubleheader sweep of Point Loma Nazarene last week. SCC remained in first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference and is ranked sixth in the nation.
SCC junior Gretchen Brandt contributed a 10-inning two-hitter with 12 strikeouts to beat Point Loma in the first game, 1-0. She was named conference pitcher of the week.

More honors: Concordia’s Chad Smith went nine for 20 (.450) with three home runs, eight runs batted in and eight runs scored in four Eagle victories last week to earn GSAC baseball player of week honors.
Smith became Concordia’s all-time leading home run hitter (16) surpassing Derrick Bly’s mark of 14 compiled from 1995-96. Smith also has 10 home runs this season to tie Bly’s record.

Chapman notes: Tuesday, the Panther baseball team began a stretch of playing seven games in 10 days as it continues its push for an NCAA postseason berth. The Panthers, ranked 27th in the nation, have won 12 of their last 14.
Chapman’s softball team is ranked fifth in the nation in the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn. poll and is 25-6 after splitting a doubleheader Tuesday with UC Riverside.
Chapman is top-ranked in the NCAA West Region and hosts No. 3 Cal Lutheran at noon Saturday at El Camino Park.
