UPN in Deal for Disney Shows

In a kids-TV deal that Buena Vista Television, a unit of Walt Disney Co., and United Paramount Network expect to be mutually beneficial, the two companies on Thursday said they have reached a long-term agreement to broadcast two hours of Disney animated programs Sunday through Friday on UPN.

The two-hour Disney block will usually air from 3 to 5 p.m., beginning in the fall of 1999.

The agreement gives UPN 52 new episodes of programming per year.

Sources close to the deal said the term is for four years, with options for more.

The agreement reunites UPN President Dean Valentine with Disney. Valentine joined UPN in September 1997, after 10 years at Disney, where he oversaw development of the programs UPN will air, including “Disney’s Recess,” currently a high-rated show on ABC’s “Disney’s One Saturday Morning.” Disney will deliver separate, original episodes of the show to ABC and UPN.
