ORANGE COUNTY EARNINGS

Newport Corp.: The Irvine maker of fiber optic products reported first-quarter net income of $2 million, or 21 cents a share, 54% higher than the $1.3 million, or 14 cents a share, posted a year ago. Sales were up 8% to $33.7 million from $31.1 million.
