The City Council has selected Mike Gordon to serve as mayor for the next two years. He was the only one nominated for the post.

A member of the five-member Council for two years, Gordon replaces former Mayor Sandra Jacobs, who was named mayor pro tem. The City Council selects a new mayor every two years.

Gordon, who owns a marketing firm, said that as mayor he plans to protect the city from the proposed expansion of Los Angeles International Airport.

He said he wants to see that El Segundo is compensated by the Hyperion Plant--a sewage treatment plant near the city--which Gordon said has made El Segundo a dumping ground for the city of Los Angeles.

Additionally, he hopes to create a healthy economic and business environment in the city.

“As I see it, whether as councilman or as mayor, I have but one single obligation to the people of El Segundo--to devote my efforts to the betterment of the community,” Gordon said.
