Sheriff’s deputies searching a man who appeared to be intoxicated shot and killed him Thursday after a scuffle, officials said.

Two deputies from the Norwalk station were driving near the three-way intersection of Pioneer Boulevard and San Antonio and Rosecrans avenues in Norwalk at 1:25 p.m. when they saw an apparently drunk man walking north on Pioneer Boulevard, Deputy Joan Raber said.

The deputies stopped William Edward Meikle, 21, of Norwalk and found he was hiding a spray can underneath the jacket he was carrying, deputies said.

A struggle took place after deputies questioned Meikle about the false name he had given, authorities said. In the struggle, the man grabbed one of the deputy’s guns, Raber said, and all three men fell to the ground.

One of the deputies, whose name has not been released, fired three shots at Meikle, who died at the scene, investigators said.

Meikle had removed the safety strap from one of the deputy’s gun holster, but had not removed the gun, Raber said. Neither deputy was injured.
