Councilman Doug Hayes will serve as mayor for the coming year after his council colleagues voted this week to elevate him to the post.

Hayes, a professional photographer, was the unanimous choice of the five-member council Tuesday after three new council members were sworn into office. Glenn Lambdin, Robert Stockly and Kris Miller-Fisher were elected April 14 to replace incumbents MaryAnn MacGillivray, James Hester and Gary Adams.

The newly elected mayor vowed after his selection to hit the ground running. “This is your City Hall and we work for you,” Hayes told onlookers, placing a welcome mat on the floor in front of the podium.

The mayor’s post in Sierra Madre is a largely ceremonial position that rotates among the council members each year. Councilman Bart Doyle was chosen by the council as mayor pro tem, a position held by those who are usually next in line for the mayor’s job.
