Ruggiero Turns Crimson, Chooses Harvard

Angela Ruggiero, a former resident of Simi Valley and a member of the 1998 gold-medal winning U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team, has committed to Harvard, her mother, Karen Ruggiero, said Saturday.

Ruggiero, 18, is a senior at Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school in Wallingford, Conn. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound defenseman chose the Crimson over Dartmouth, Minnesota and Brown.

Ruggiero and her Olympic teammates were honored on the field before a recent New York Mets’ game and visit the White House on Tuesday.

Midfielder Chad Schutt of Camarillo High, an All-Marmonte League selection last season, has committed to San Diego State.

BASEBALL

Quiet sweep: Three victories gained by The Master’s College without playing might seem weird, but Coach Monte Brooks said there’s a good explanation.

In fact, the Mustangs (33-8) could have claimed five victories.

Master’s was scheduled to host Hawaii Pacific in a five-game series starting Thursday, but the Sea Warriors canceled.

“The NAIA rule is that when you have a signed contract and you don’t show up, you forfeit,” Brooks said. “We decided to just settle for the three [victories].”

The Mustangs will play in the NAIA at-large tournament starting Wednesday at Biola or Azusa Pacific. The tournament winner advances to the Far West Regional on May 8-13.
