Sun Microsystems Inc. said it plans to spend more than $1 billion on research and development this year as it focuses on enhancing its Solaris Unix-based system, storage and Java technology products. Palo Alto-based Sun, which makes workstations and large computers called servers that run corporate networks, controls 40% of the Unix workstation market, said George Reyes, Sun vice president and corporate controller. Sun shares fell 75 cents to close at $39.94 on Nasdaq.

* Irvine-base Meyers Group Real Estate Information said it has acquired several real estate information companies in an effort to launch a national homes database service. Meyers purchased Residential New Home Trends in Portland, Ore.; Genesis Marketing Group in Denver; and Housing Data Reports in the mid-Atlantic region. Terms were not disclosed.

* La Jolla-based Jenny Craig Inc. reported fiscal third-quarter net income of $2 million, 10 cents per share, compared with $908,000, or 4 cents, a year ago.
