Al Checchi

So, Al Checchi doesn’t believe that there is a single public school in the entire state of California that is good enough for his children (“Checchi Says He Would Not Send His Children to State’s Public Schools,” April 23).

That comment says a whole lot more about Checchi than it does about public education in California.

My five children have been in the public school system since they started kindergarten. The great majority of teachers and administrators with whom I have worked (with a rare exception) have been competent and caring. I have been pleased with my children’s progress. Their performances on standardized tests have shown that they are doing well.

I want to thank Checchi for pointing out to me that I have sacrificed their futures by putting them in the public school system. I plan to sit them down tonight to apologize and to inform them that they can expect a lifetime of failure due to my selfish mistake.

When will we realize (or admit) that success in school has less to do with the quality of the system than it does with the attitude of the student and parents?

Candidate Al says he would never risk his kids’ future by sending them to a public school, yet he won’t support vouchers for those who want to make the same choice but can’t afford to. Now I know how to pronounce “Checchi”: hypocrite.
