NASCAR Racing Set for L.A.

Amajor NASCAR auto race will be held on the streets of Los Angeles for the first time this Labor Day weekend, it was announced Monday.

The Ford/NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series L.A. Street Race will take place on a 1.4-mile, six-turn course bordering the Sports Arena, the Coliseum, USC and the new California Science Center.

The course will be built using more than 10 million pounds of concrete embankments and 3 1/2 miles of chain-link fence.

William Burke, who started the Los Angeles Marathon 14 years ago, said he created the auto race, the marathon and other events to show the world the best of Los Angeles.

“Auto racing has become the No. 1 spectator sport in the world,” Burke said.

Last year, nearly 100,000 people attended the Ford Los Angeles Grand Prix Vintage Races in downtown Los Angeles, which was sponsored by Burke’s organization.
