Tom Glavine won his ninth consecutive game, and Javier Lopez and Ryan Klesko homered as the Braves beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 12-2, at Phoenix on Tuesday night.

Glavine (4-0) scattered three hits over seven innings as the Braves improved to 6-0 against the expansion Diamondbacks. The left-hander lowered his league-leading earned-run average to 0.97, struck out eight and walked one.

Glavine has won nine in a row dating to last season and is 9-0 in April since 1996.

Arizona, which has lost six of its last seven, fell to an NL-worst 7-20.

Lopez’s solo homer in the fifth gave the Braves a 2-0 lead, and Klesko added a two-run shot in the sixth.

The runs were more than enough for Glavine, who retired the first 12 Arizona batters. Matt Williams ended the string when he hit a one-hop single past third baseman Chipper Jones.

San Diego 7, Chicago 3--Tony Gwynn capped his eighth career five-hit game with a home run and scored three times as the Padres beat the Cubs at San Diego.

Gwynn singled in his first four at-bats, then hit his third homer of the season to right field off reliever Terry Mulholland leading off the eighth. Gwynn briefly answered a curtain call, tipping his cap to the crowd.

Gwynn, winner of four straight NL batting titles and eight overall, raised his average from .321 to .360. He singled to all three fields, including a bouncer up the middle in the second to drive in a run.

Houston 4, New York 3--Closer John Franco failed to protect a ninth-inning lead for the second straight day as the Astros rallied for a 10th-inning victory at Houston.

On Monday, Franco squandered a 3-1 lead in the ninth as the Astros came back to win in New York.

The left-hander was put in the same situation on Tuesday, and loaded the bases before Houston tied it on Moises Alou’s two-run single.

With the winning run at third and none out, Franco was able to get the game to extra innings by striking out the side.

Colorado 8, Florida 7--Neifi Perez had three hits and three RBIs, and Dante Bichette had four hits as the Rockies held on for a victory over the Marlins at Denver.

Pedro Astacio (2-3), who entered the game with a 10.00 ERA, overcame early control problems to get his first win since April 2.

Astacio went seven innings, giving up four runs on nine hits with six walks and three strikeouts. He also had a pair of singles and an RBI as the Rockies earned a split of the two-game series.

Andy Larkin (1-1), the fifth Marlins’ rookie pitcher to start against Colorado in as many meetings this season, held the Rockies hitless over the first three innings but was roughed up for four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
