The Angels will retire the uniform No. 11 of former player and manager Jim Fregosi in a home-plate ceremony before their 1 p.m. game today against the Boston Red Sox.

Fregosi, who played shortstop for the Angels from 1961-71, was traded on Dec. 10, 1971, to the Mets for Nolan Ryan and three other players. Fregosi came back to manage the Angels from June 1, 1978, through May 28, 1981.

Fregosi guided the team to an 88-74 record and its first Western Division championship in 1979, when he was runner-up in voting for AL manager of the year. His Angel teams were 237-248 (.489) during his four seasons as manager.

As a player, Fregosi was a member of the All-Star team six times. He was a Gold Glove recipient in 1964. Fregosi retired as a player with a .265 lifetime batting average in 16 major league seasons.

He was inducted into the Angels’ Hall of Fame on May 17, 1989.

His retired uniform number will join those of Gene Autry (26), Rod Carew (29), Nolan Ryan (30), Jimmie Reese (50) and Jackie Robinson (42).

Also taking part in the ceremony will be two of Fregosi’s teammates: Buck Rodgers, a catcher and the team’s manager from 1991-94, and Bobby Knoop, the Angels’ second baseman from 1964-69 and a coach from 1979-96.
