A SPECIAL REPORT: UTILITY COSTS

Cool Cash

Beating the heat can be simple, right? Just click on the air conditioner. But keeping cool without putting your cash flow in deep freeze is tougher. “Some residents are in for a shock when they get their next electricity bill,” said Marie Lemelle, of the Department of Water and Power. “But there are ways to change that if you start now.”

Bowling For Dollars

Trade in your toilet for an ultra-low-flush toilet which uses 1.6 gallons of water instead of five gallons per flush. At the Valley Conservation Office, swap your old bowl for low-flush toilets. With the switch comes a $100 rebate on your next water bill. Still, some remain skeptical and prefer a stronger flush.

Insulate Year-Round

Insulating reduces heat, said Mike Mizrahi, of Southern California Gas Co. “Without insulation, cool air escapes.” Some homeowners have invested in a transparent film for windows. Applied to glass, the screen reduces heat and cuts down ultraviolet rays entering the home.

Turn It Off

Temptation is to keep the air conditioner running full blast all day, said Mizrahi. But consumers will find that comes at a hefty price. Mizrahi advises homeowners to turn off the AC when they’re not home. Another tip is to clean vents for more effective cooling.
