Patent Is Issued for Biopool Technology

The U.S. Patent Office has issued a patent for the use of poultry antibodies to determine the number of blood cells in humans to the inventors of the technology, doctors Tomas Lindahl and Anders Larsson, clinical hemostasis researchers in Sweden.

Biopool International in Ventura entered into an agreement with the inventors in 1994 to be the exclusive worldwide licensee of the technology and has funded expenses associated with obtaining the patent.

The technology features a novel method of using antibodies derived from poultry sources--such as chickens--to detect blood platelets and measure their status of activation.

Biopool has begun to develop an antibody-based product using the patented technology, and research reports have been published using Biopool’s chicken antibodies to diagnose platelet dysfunction in certain disorders, measure immune complexes in malignant disease and monitor the efficiency of anti-platelet drugs.

Biopool develops and manufactures products to assess and diagnose blood disorders.
