15 Tons of Materials Recycled at Playa Vista Site
Playa Vista developers reported Monday that they have recycled almost 90% of the materials from seven buildings that were demolished at the site.
More than 15,000 tons of aluminum, asphalt, brass, concrete, copper, lumber and steel was salvaged from the 1940s-era buildings, said a Playa Vista spokesman.
The materials were reused for on-site projects or sold, he said.
Eleven remaining buildings, including the historic hangar where the “Spruce Goose” airplane was built, will be refurbished.
The 1,087-acre Playa Vista development--which has been criticized by several environmental groups for intruding on sensitive wetlands--is to include thousands of residential units along with commercial properties, possibly including the DreamWorks SKG movie studios. About 500 acres will be open space, including the freshwater and saltwater marshes.
