Plague Threat Prompts City to Poison Squirrels
Citing the risk of bubonic plague, county officials have ordered the city to decrease the squirrel population in Pacific Palisades Park.
The disease is carried by fleas, which have grown more numerous because of heavy rains, said city spokeswoman Judy Rambeau.
Fifteen poisoned-bait stations have been placed on the bluff side of the protective fence between Adelaide Drive and Marguerita Avenue.
“After about two or three feedings, the poison makes the squirrels feel tired and they go back to their burrows to die,” said Rambeau.
The stations will be removed on Aug. 15, she said, urging residents to help control the squirrel population by not feeding the animals.
