Semelsberger Shoots 67, Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Jason Semelsberger of Newhall shot four-under-par 67 at Pauma Valley Country Club and qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 24-30 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

Semelsberger, a U.S. Open qualifier last year, had a two-round total of 142 to finish one stroke behind medalist Alex Petric of San Marcos to earn one of four available spots.

Oliver Rheinfurth of Northridge shot 73-72--145 at Saticoy Country Club to tie for medalist honors and earn one of three spots at that site.

Qualifying continues through Aug. 11.

J.T. Kohut of Simi Valley is tied for 68th place after shooting two-over-par 74 in the first round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys Junior Championship at the Dallas Athletic Club in Mesquite, Texas.

Kohut is 10 strokes behind leader Russell Wrentz of Cabot, Ark., in the 143-player tournament.

Justin Ohye of Calabasas struggled to an 81 and is tied in 135th place.

Brian O’Flaherty of Westlake Village shot three-over-par 73 in the opening round of the AJGA Ashworth/Golfweek Junior at Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook.

O’Flaherty is tied for fifth place, three strokes behind leaders Cullen Brasfield of Reno, Nev., and Brett Bockmann of Palm Desert.

Ryan Wyman of Valencia is one stroke behind O’Flaherty.

Charlie Smith of Santa Clarita and Andy Brisbois of La Canada each shot 75.

In the girls’ division, Saki Uechi of Panorama City, two-time City Section girls’ champion, shot 80 and is tied for sixth, 10 strokes behind leader Yunny Cho of Torrance.

Charlene Alfonso of Agoura shot 83 and is 11th.

TRACK AND FIELD

Blaine Bussey of Taft High finished third and Mentu Daniel of Antelope Valley placed fourth in the 400 meters in the young men’s division of the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics at the University of Washington on Sunday.

Bussey, third in the 400 in the state championships in June, clocked a career best of 47.20 seconds and Daniel set a school record of 47.24.

Bussey’s time was the fastest in the state this year and moved him to fifth on the all-time region performer list.

Daniel moved to second on the yearly state list and to sixth on the all-time region list.

Bussey and Daniel will be seniors this fall.

Sierra Hauser-Price, a sophomore at Notre Dame, placed sixth in the intermediate girls’ 200 in 24.62.

SOFTBALL

Lauren Casper of Agoura High had two hits with two runs batted in during a 5-0 victory for Woodland Hills Stealth against Utah’s Lady Warriors in a first-round game of the Amateur Softball Assn. 16-and-under national tournament in Novi, Mich.

The Conejo Valley Girls’ Softball Assn. 10-and-under all-star team has qualified for the Amateur Softball Assn. Western Area Championships today through Sunday in Oakdale, Calif.

The squad, made up of players from Thousand Oaks, advanced to the 25-team tournament after winning a Southern California qualifier and placing fifth among 16 teams in the California state tournament last week in Garden Grove.

BASEBALL

The Conejo Valley Big League baseball team, two days after hitting seven home runs, did not get a hit Tuesday, but still beat San Diego, 1-0, in a Division 3 tournament game at Behringer Park in La Mirada.

Conejo Valley advances to the Division final Thursday against the winner of today’s elimination game between San Diego and Garden Grove. The Division champion advances to the Western Regional in Sacramento.

Danny Greene scored on a wild pitch in the fourth after he walked, stole second and advanced to third on another wild pitch. Conejo Valley’s Tyler Johnson (2-0) struck out six in the two-hitter.

Mario Delgado struck out eight in the no-hitter for San Diego.

FYI

The Moorpark College All-American Wrestling Clinic is scheduled for Saturday in the Raider Wrestling Pavilion.

The camp, open to elementary and high school students of all skill levels, will be directed by Moorpark Coach Paul Keysaw, the Western State Conference coach of the year in 1996 and ’97 who guided the Raiders to a JC state championship last fall.
