Kevorkian’s Lawyer Wins Gubernatorial Primary in Michigan

Geoffrey Fieger, who campaigned with the flamboyant theatrics he used as retired pathologist Jack Kevorkian’s lawyer, has won a narrow victory in the Democratic primary for governor of Michigan.

Fieger renewed his attacks Wednesday on Gov. John Engler, calling him “a serious threat to the people and the infrastructure.”

Fieger, who has persuaded three juries to acquit the suicide doctor, billed himself as an anti-establishment outsider who would protect civil rights, saying that, while he doesn’t favor assisted suicide, it’s “ . . . a personal decision.”

Fieger edged Larry Owen, a lawyer, in Tuesday’s balloting, 41% to 37%.

Engler, who is favored to win a third term, was asked by WWJ radio how he felt about running against someone with Fieger’s record. Engler said: “I wouldn’t even call that a record. I might just call it a pattern of behavior.”
