A man who witnesses said looked like a surfer robbed a Balboa Peninsula bank Thursday afternoon, police said.

At 3 p.m., a man wearing corduroy shorts, a long-sleeved shirt and sandals entered the Bank of America branch in the 3400 block of Newport Boulevard, Police Sgt. Mike McDermott said.

The man, described as 5-foot-10, 150 pounds with short blond hair and a dark tan, walked up to a teller and scribbled out a note stating that he had a gun and wanted money, McDermott said.

“The tellers described the suspect as looking like a surfer,” McDermott said. Also, he said, “apparently he misspelled some of the words in his note.”

After receiving an undisclosed sum of money, the man fled the bank on foot and was last seen heading north on Newport Boulevard, McDermott said.
