FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--High numbers of largemouth bass are being reported, in sizes ranging from one to four pounds. Small, natural-colored plastics are working, as are waterdogs and mudsuckers. Try waterdogs for catfish, as well. Mealworms and wax worms are getting bluegills. Trout fishing slow.

LAKE PIRU--Trollers using needlefish with six to nine colors between the mouth of Reservoir Cove and the dam are catching limits on trout. Try bikini or rainbow lure patterns very early and very late, and nickel bikini or nickel/redhead patterns during the day. Bass are hitting on small plastics and night crawlers early, top-water baits in the evening.

PYRAMID LAKE--Black bass remain hot along shores and in five to 15 feet of water. Anchovies and stink baits taking catfish. There isn’t a lot of top-water action for striped bass.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trolling needlefish and night crawlers for trout are getting results around 40 to 60 feet. Bass have been hitting top-water baits early in the day.

LAKE CASITAS--This has been the best trout season in years and the best action has been by the dam. Trolling with needlefish producing two-three pounders. Bass biting best early mornings, poppers and buzz baits working. Bass are in the six-nine-pound range.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Fishing has picked up since recent trout plant. Power Bait, salmon eggs and trout teasers are all working.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish to three pounds are being caught. Joe and Dorothy Wells, Los Angeles, caught seven- and eight-pounders using cut mackerel. Crappie fishing is fair. Best spots are off the dock, in Crappie Cove and near the catfish tree in Santiago Flats.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The best catfish action has been at Kid’s Lake with mackerel hunks dipped in Hog Wild. A marshmallow-meal worm combination and Catfish Power Bait in blood, fish or cheese are also working. Caroline Copi of Riverside caught a 19.4-pounder using shrimp.

CORONA LAKE--Bill Markley of Corona reeled in a 45-pound 9-ounce catfish Saturday at the Rock Wall. He was using mackerel. Plenty of 15-fish daily limits have been posted. Crappies are biting best near the boat dock.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--After dark continues to be the best time for catfish. The hottest spot is at the dam, where a large school is feeding. Mackerel and shrimp working best. Bass hitting top-water lures early and late, averaging two to four pounds. Bluegills and crappies hitting mealworms during the day.

LAKE SKINNER--Night crawlers, chicken livers and mackerel are getting catfish near the dam and at the east end. Stripers are hitting chicken livers, sardines and anchovies in the early morning and late afternoon near the inlet and dam. Night crawlers and spinner baits taking bass on the south shore and the east end of the lake.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Trout is still being stocked in Miller Creek. Crappies are hitting at Cleghorn and Outhouse Cove, as well as at Miller Creek. Catfish are hitting by the dam on chicken liver and anchovies.

LAKE PERRIS--Fishing has been slow, and the sizes aren’t eye-catching, either. Trolling at 40 to 50 feet near the dam has worked best for trout. Night crawlers taking some bass, and bluegills are biting on crickets.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Overall, fishing is slow. Early morning and late evening best.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente was the only lake reporting any trout--along with 97 bass. Hodges yielded 68 channel catfish. Lower Otay fishermen brought in more than 5,000 bluegills. The catch of the week went to 13-year-old Aaron Riley of Santee, who reeled in a 10-14 bass at Sutherland.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Fishing slow, except for bluegills. Mealworms and nightcrawlers working best. Trout stocking scheduled Monday.

EASTERN SIERRA--The valves at South Lake and Lake Sabrina have been opened, so the water at Bishop Creek is running fast and a little dirty and fishermen are having to work for what they catch. Both South Lake and Sabrina have produced for trollers using Woolly Buggers, and Green Olives. Trollers are going deeper at Crowley Lake, and striker lures are working at Convict Lake. Rock Creek Lake is a hot spot for trollers. At Bridgeport Reservoir, Buckeye Bay is producing limits. Alper rainbow trout have been planted at West Walker River and Virginia Lakes, and dry flies and bait are working well there.
