Park Improvements May Receive Funding

The replacement of sidewalks, repair of roadways, upgrade of picnic areas and renovation of sprinkler systems are among improvements to El Cariso Park that could occur if the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves the use of $1.6 million in Proposition A funds for the park.

The board now awaits a formal proposal from county park officials outlining desired improvements, said Laura Fay, a deputy to county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. If approved, the projects would take a few months to complete, said Joel Bellman, a Yaroslavsky spokesman.

The county-run El Cariso Park, at 13100 Hubbard St., recently hosted a public meeting for residents to air suggestions for improvements.

Jan Lange, El Cariso Park supervisor, said a recommendation to expand the recreation building at the park drew the most interest from the residents.

Representatives from various area organizations, including the Sylmar Chamber of Commerce, Friends of El Cariso Park, a local tennis association, a Neighborhood Watch program and an anti-graffiti group, attended the meeting Wednesday, Bellman said.

Some participants suggested improvements that cannot be funded through Proposition A, a $540-million park and open-space enhancement measure approved by voters in 1992.

Bellman said officials will forward all suggestions not covered by Proposition A funds to government agencies that can address them.
