Group Offers Grants to Benefit Latinos

Share

The Ventura County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from nonprofit groups whose aim is to further the social and economic status of the area’s Latinos.

The program, Destino 2000: Hispanic Legacy Fund Grants, is intended to better address what is one of the fastest growing segments of the county’s population, said Kate McLean, president of the foundation. A 1994 study found that 26% of county residents identified themselves as Latino, she said.

A total of $20,000 was given to nine groups last year. The smallest grant, for $1,050, went to the American Assn. of University Women to send three county Latina students to a math and science conference.

The largest grant, for $2,078, was given to the Richard Bard School in Port Hueneme to teach computer skills to bilingual parents and students.

Grants totaling $20,000 for this year’s recipients could be as much as $8,000 and cover up to 12 months of expenses.

Anyone wishing to apply for this year’s grants can contact the foundation at 988-0196 for an application. Proposals for grants must be received by 5 p.m., Sept. 11.
