Cancer Society Plans Designer Clothes Sale

The manager of the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop in Sherman Oaks was grateful when a woman came into her store last month with an armful of designer clothing.

Now, Pam Zacharia says, she’s excited because the same woman has dropped by each week, bringing in a collection of outfits worth an estimated $50,000.

The recently acquired clothing and about 1,000 other items will be brought out of the store’s stock room and sold this weekend for the shop’s first “Midnite Madness” sale. The event will feature many high-end designer names, such as Christian Dior, Donna Karan, Escada and St. John Knits. Shoes by Ferragamo and Bruno Magli will also be sold.

The recent donor is a local real estate agent who wishes to remain anonymous. The Cancer Society shop was chosen after a family member died of the disease and the agent wanted her relative’s wardrobe to go where it would be appreciated. The clothing belonged to a relative who died of cancer, and some of the more than 150 pieces still had price tags on them, Zacharia said.

Items at the sale will be available in a variety of sizes and price ranges, and some have never been worn. Most will be sold at one-fourth the original price.

For smaller budgets, labels such as ABS and Ann Taylor are also plentiful, said Zacharia, who hopes $300,000 will be raised at the event.

Donations are always accepted, and Zacharia would like to see more large and extra-large size clothes come in.

“We tend to have a lot of size 4, 6 and 8 clothing because women donate these as they gain weight,” Zacharia said.

The Discovery Shops are the chief fund-raising source for the American Cancer Society, Zacharia said. About 80% of the shops’ proceeds go to the society. Each store is run by volunteers, many who are cancer survivors.

The society funds cancer research and runs support programs for cancer patients and their families.

The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday at 4454 Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks.
