Council OKs Tougher Law for Adult Businesses

The City Council has revised its municipal code to include stricter regulations for adult businesses.

The revised ordinance defines different types of adult businesses, establishes a separate process for acquiring a business permit and includes tougher operating standards, said Sherry Jordan, acting senior planner for the city.

Additionally, the new ordinance doubles the amount of space separating adult entertainment businesses from churches, schools and residential zones to 600 feet.

“This [ordinance] is better defined and easier to abide by,” said Jordan.

The adult entertainment industry isn’t exactly booming in Culver City--the community has one retail store that sells erotic merchandise and one hotel that charges by the hour and shows adult videos in the rooms.

But Councilman Albert Vera said two such businesses are more than enough.

“The new ordinance is trying to prevent youths to be exposed to what we definitely do not want in Culver City,” Vera said.
