2 Conservators Hired to Relocate Art
The city hired two art conservators this week to remove public murals, sculptures and dioramas at the Seacliff shopping center at Yorktown Avenue and Main Street, guaranteeing the life of the artwork.
The City Council unanimously voted to spend $255,000 for the conservators, ConservArt Associates and Public Art Management, to relocate the art to City Hall.
Mayor Shirley S. Dettloff said the money has come from private contributions, the sale of steel pelican sculptures and a donation of $210,000 from Shea Properties, which is demolishing the center for a new commercial development.
One art expert said the depictions of coastal birds around the center is worth about $1 million, Dettloff said.
The project should take about 60 days, city officials said.
