Patt and Matt: Proudly Facing the World

Share

The revealing column by Patt Morrison about Dodger outfielder Matt Luke and herself truly qualifies as inspirational (“The Face of Individuality,” SoCal P.O.V., July 19). Perhaps it should be required reading for everyone, whether they themselves have a facial disfigurement or if they are inclined to stare at others who do.

Matt Luke is one Dodger we will all be looking at and rooting for.

Morrison’s column about Matt Luke touched me deep within my soul.

At the age of 6, a dog ripped open the right side of my face and nearly removed my ear. I experienced nearly all of what Morrison mentioned--hiding my face with my hand, hiding it with my hair, etc.

Now I am 22 and the physical wounds have healed, but the internal damage has not. Every day I feel as though people are staring at my face.

I need to overcome my disgust with myself, as has Luke, a beautiful man who has been able to conquer his own demons. His recovery gives me hope that in time I, too, can accept myself and turn my deformity into a personal plus.

I enjoyed Morrison’s column about Matt Luke, but, for the record, there were 12 apostles, not four. Four wrote gospels.
