Salary Cuts, Fee Hikes Considered in New Budget

City officials examining ways to make up a $2.5-million budget deficit Wednesday will consider options including increasing city fees, slashing salaries and possibly eliminating the city clerk’s job.

The city’s executive management team last week proposed $1.38 million in cuts to make up much of the deficit.

In June, the city balanced the budget based on a plan that called for the Redevelopment Agency to repay the city $1.8 million in loans. But the council has not made a decision whether the agency should repay the money.

Councilman Bill Van Cleave said the council should take the money the redevelopment agency owes the city.

“This is like borrowing money when you have more money in your savings account,” Van Cleave said.
