Longtime Ventura resident Grover C. Harris, a retired painting contractor, died Sunday following a lengthy illness. He was 70.

Harris was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C. He married in 1963, and he and his wife, Bonnie, moved to Ventura in July 1974.

Harris worked as a painting contractor for 30 years before retiring in 1971, his family said. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Ventura Post 339.

He enjoyed traveling.

In addition to his wife, Harris is survived by a son, Jeffrey Jessup of Reno; a brother, J.C. Harris of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Edith Stanley of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

There will be a visitation from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. A service will be held at noon Friday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dan Hill of First Church of the Nazarene in Ventura officiating. Interment is private.
