Tribe Is Commissioned to Build Catalina Ferry
Catalina Express, a ferry service to Catalina Island, has commissioned a boat from the Mashantucket Pequot tribal nation in Connecticut, the company chairman said.
Doug Bombard said it will be the company’s eighth vessel.
The ship, which is being built at the tribe’s Pequot River Shipworks in New London, Conn., will be completed in March and sail to the West Coast via the Panama Canal, a three-week journey.
“They have quite a fine facility, and what we’re interested in is quality,” said Bombard.
The $6.5-million, all-aluminum catamaran is 135 feet long with a beam of 34 feet and is the first of the kind to be built by the shipyard. It will hold 300 passengers and has a cruising speed of 40 mph.
