Yankees’ Wells Handles Rangers

After seeing the Texas Rangers rally twice this season to hand him no decisions, David Wells made sure there would be no rally Friday night.

“They always give me trouble and I wanted to redeem myself,” Wells (16-2) said after pitching a six-hitter to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-0 victory.

Wells, who entered the game with a 12.46 earned-run average against the Rangers this season, struck out seven and walked one for his fourth shutout and eighth consecutive win.

Tino Martinez homered twice for the Yankees, who ended a rare two-game losing streak.

The Yankees have lost three in a row only once, the first three games of the season.

Martinez, who went three for four, reached 100 runs batted in for the third consecutive season. He is the first Yankee to do so since Don Mattingly from 1984-87.
