The La Jolla Playhouse presents a 50th-anniversary production of Moss Hart’s wicked 1948 backstage comedy, “Light Up the Sky,” revolving around opening night of a show’s pre-Broadway, out-of-town tryout.

7pm: Gospel Music

They’ll be dancing in the aisles at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre when the 150-voice multiethnic Agape International Choir, accompanied by its eight-piece House Band, presents “Who Feels the Spirit, Knows the Spirit.” The program blends folk, jazz, popular, reggae and gospel music.

Six misfits in an urban school, awaiting a replacement teacher who, it seems, may never arrive, begin to teach the class themselves in British playwright Nigel William’s “Class Enemy.” The drama is presented by Eagle Tribute Productions and the Mark Taper Forum’s Latino Theatre Initiative at the Court Theatre.

6:30pm: Jazz

An unusual trombone-tenor sax frontline, soul jazz rhythms and hard bop solos made the Jazz Crusaders one of the most popular groups in jazz in the 1960s. Two of the group’s key voices, tenor-saxophonist Wilton Felder and trombonist Wayne Henderson, reunite for an “almost free” concert filled with nostalgic sounds, funky rhythms and soulful playing.

6pm: Culture

Five performance and musical artists and ensembles, plus five experimental films in a spectrum of styles, will be presented on the lawn of a private home in Pasadena during “On the Lawn: A Celebration of Performance, Music, Film and Food.” The program (which includes dinner) is being presented by the Pasadena artists’ group NewTown. Robert Breer’s “A Frog on a Swing,” Janice Findley’s “Faux Paw” and “A Nermish Gothic” are among the short films to be screened; artists Tammy Fites, Robin Lorentz and Sunrise Child are among artists who will perform.
