A shark attacked a 16-year-old boogie-boarder Wednesday off the popular beach north of San Francisco, biting him several times on the thigh, authorities said.

The Terra Linda youth was in serious but stable condition at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major lacerations. The wounds were not considered to be life-threatening.

The boy was in shallow waters about 50 yards from shore when the shark grabbed his right thigh about 2:30 p.m., park officials said.

“His friends heard him screaming. They turned around to see him being pulled under,” said Chris Powell, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The boy managed to climb onto his board before friends and lifeguards pulled him to shore, she said. He was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

It was the first documented shark attack at Stinson Beach, which is about 15 miles up the coast from the Golden Gate Bridge.
